Over the years there have been many books written about aliens. While some of these books are better left on the shelf, others definitely deserve a read. If you happen to be a fan of aliens and science fiction, be sure to check out the following list. It highlights seven good books about aliens, in no particular order.
1. The War of the Worlds
Written by H.G. Wells and published in 1898, this book is one of the first written about a conflict between aliens and mankind. Divided into two main parts, the book begins with the arrival of aliens to the London area. In the second part of the book, the narrator details the overtaking of Earth by the aliens. This book has had a large influence on the science fiction world and has sparked movies, comic books, and various other adaptations.
2. The Mote in God’s Eye
Larry Niven wrote this exciting book that takes place in the year 3016 and details mankind’s discovery of an ancient alien civilization. This civilization is found in the Mote, which is an isolated star nestled within a cloud of dust. The alien beings on the Mote welcome mankind but seem very secretive about various things. This book is popular and intense, making it worthy of a read by anyone who is interested in aliens or science fiction.
3. Solaris
Published in 1961, this book was written by Polish author Stanislaw Lem. The story focuses on the study of the planet Solaris by human scientists. They also probe the planet’s massive ocean, which seems to be a huge and mysterious abyss. The story evolves and the human researchers realize they too are being studied, by Solaris’ non-human inhabitants.
4. Encounter
This book is an actual account written by Kelly Cahill, who claims to have had an encounter with aliens in the Australian countryside in 1993. Full of suspense, this intriguing book describes in detail the events leading up to and following the supposed encounter. Keep in mind that this book is not for those who scare easily, as it is quite eerie at times.
5. Communion
This book was written by Whitley Strieber and published in 1987. It is a so-called “true story” that details Strieber’s repeated contact with extra-terrestrial beings. The book has a unique and terrifying way of opening up readers’ minds to the possible existence of a non-human race.
6. The Sparrow
This haunting science fiction book was written by Mary Doria Russell and published in 1996. It tells the tale of religious missionaries that get sent to a planet where alien life has been discovered. What they discover leaves them questioning many aspects of their human life. If you enjoy a suspenseful book, be sure to pick this one up.
7. The Mount
Written by Carol Emshwiller, this creative novel tells the story of alien invaders who gain control of Earth and make humans their mounts, or slaves. The book focuses on one mount in particular who begins to question his life as a slave, and wonders if he can ever escape and become a real human again.
